Electronic cigarettes, or “e-cigs,” are not actually cigarettes because they do not burn anything nor do they contain any tobacco. Rather, they are battery-operated vaporizing devices which are made to mimic smoking a cigarette. Most e-cigs contain a vaporizer, battery component, and a liquid (usually nicotine) container.
Most e-cigarettes are designed to look just like a regular tobacco cigarette. The part of the e-cig where tobacco would normally be is the battery component. It also contains the vaporizing device, also called an atomizing device. The “filter” of the e-cigarette is a hollow cartridge which contains a liquid, or “e-juice.” Even though most electronic cigarettes are designed to look like tobacco cigarettes, they can come in many other forms as well. There are many which are made to resemble objects like pens and others with sleek, original designs. As e-cigarettes become more popular, we are likely to see many more variations on the design.
When a person takes a drag of an electronic cigarette, a sensor within the e-cigarette will detect a change in the pressure level. This causes the heating component of the e-cig to turn on and the liquid solution (called “electronic juice”) gets vaporized. The juice is made up of water and propylene glycol as well as any additives, like flavoring or nicotine. Since the container holding the e-juice is hollow, the vaporized solution goes back into the “smoker’s” mouth, imitating smoking. There is no smoke which leaves the e-cigarette, just a little puff of vaporized e-juice. This puff resembles smoking and gives smokers the same feeling of taking a drag of tobacco. Many e-cigarettes also have LED lights on their tips, in the area where a cigarette would be lighted. When a drag is taken on the e-cig, the LED will light up. This not only further mimics smoking, but also tells the user that the e-cig is working.
Electronic cigarettes are fairly simple devices though you will have to replace the battery occasionally. Depending on the type of e-cig, you may have to refill the juice in the cartridge as often as daily or as little as monthly. Most electronic cigarettes are eco-friendly and all parts can be reused, so you save not only your health but also the environment.
