You can now buy electronic cigarettes in a variety of styles and forms, but they all still essentially contain the same parts. Here is an in-depth description of each of the e-cigarette parts.
The Battery
An electronic cigarette typically uses a lithium ion battery which is about the size of your finger. The battery component of the e-cig is inseparable from the powering system circuitry. So, when you order a new e-cig battery, you will be getting an entire new end part. Most e-cigs have an LED light on the tip of the battery housing. There may be an LED light cover on your e-cig.
There are usually several different ways that you can charge your electronic cigarette battery, including USB, car adapter, AC, or a portable charger. It usually doesn’t take long to charge the battery and a single charge can typically last 1-3 days, depending on how often you use it.
Depending on the quality of the electronic cigarette battery you buy, you can expect it to last about a year. New batteries are not expensive at just about $10, though you may have to pay even more that this amount just for shipping. When you buy an e-cig, you may want to buy several batteries at once to cut costs in the future.
You do not have to turn on or off the electronic cigarette. The battery has a pressure sensor inside the housing. When you take a drag on the e-cig, it changes the pressure and causes the battery to instantly turn on the atomizer. Just keep in mind that wind can also turn on your e-cigarette so keep it clear of windy spaces.
The Atomizer
Also called the vaporizer, the atomizer is the part of the electronic cigarette which heats up the e-juice and turns it into water vapor. A vaporizer will usually not last as long as a battery. Expect to replace your vaporizer every 4 months of so, depending on how often you smoke. The vaporizer is also prone to damage so you may need to replace it before this time if you drop your e-cigarette a lot.
The Cartridge
The cartridge is the “filter” of the electronic cigarette. It is hollow and you can put a liquid inside of it known as “e-juice.” The e-juice contains water with glycerin or propylene glycol. The e-juice may also contain nicotine, flavor or aroma. When the battery turns on in the e-cig, it heats up the atomizer which then causes the e-juice to vaporize. This all happens instantaneously so you get a mist of vapor in your mouth. The vapor is odorless but typically tastes like tobacco cigarette smoke. An e-cig cartridge can usually hold enough e-juice for the equivalent of 15-20 cigarettes. You may have a choice between disposable or refillable e-cig cartridges. With the refillable cartridges, you can usually use them for at least a month, thus making them a very cheap smoking alternative. Cartridges typically cost about $1 to replace.
